Alfred Rombout died last Wednesday. I knew Alf for more than 20 odd years, as a friend, a flatmate, an adversary, a father, and a partner. he was a truly rare person, and an even rarer doctor.
To this day I have said to anyone that sought my opinion, that there was only one doctor I trusted in this world, and that was Alf Rombout.
Whether he was writing a prescription for me on a piece of scrap paper, suturing his own hand on our dining room table, or spending countless hours ensuring his patients got the very best of care he could provide for them in often difficult circumstances, he was a rare gem in the often lacking world of health care.
Most recently Alf lived on Kangaroo Island off the South Australian coast with his wife Tracee, and daughters Mia and Delphi, and worked at the Kangaroo Island Medical Centre.
His family, Ted and Tine, and sisters Mariette live in Sydney and Leonie lives in Brisbane.
He was diagnosed with a malignant disease in March 2003, and he met that challenge as he had met all others before. He wasn’t going to let it keep him down, he would explore every avenue to beat it, and he would make sure his life would continue as normally as possible.
